High School Diary Entries, March of 1988

It's been a while since I've gone back and rehashed some old diary entries for you... so here we go ... My current "two cents" are in itals!

Today we're going back to March, 1988. I was in 10th grade, my first year back into the scary world of public school.

Spring is so ultimately depressing. When I hear birds chirping it brings back sad memories, memories of my ex-best friend, Serena who dumped me as soon as we left grammar school. (It's funny to read this first line--I actually blogged about how birds chirping depresses me today but for different reasons. I think I've just always hated the spring season for one reason or another.) The fun times I had in 7th and 8th grade. My new love for The Monkees. (I was this crazy insane Monkees fanatic from age 12-15).

What a fun-filled weekend! Tracey slept over last night. I babysat tonight and made $8 (I guess that was a lot back then!).

Right now there's some kind of gas leak on our block. There are tonz of fire engines, cop cars and people. I wonder if they will make us all evacuate. I'm thinking about what items to take in case of an emergency. Sorta like personal possessions. I'd want to take all of my Monkees stuff and Trapper Keeper of autographed pix, etc.

Two firemen just rang the door bell and came into our basement. I'm so scared. What if our house blows up? I don't smell any gas. I hope everything is OK. It's 11:15 pm and I'm afraid to go to sleep. (Totally don't remember this!)

I think Tracey is ending our friendship because of Kathy K. I can tell she doesn't like me. (I remember this short-lived friendship and to this day, do not know why we stopped being friends. There wasn't a fight or anything, we just drifted. I totally forgot her BFF Kathy was a bit weird to me when Tracey befriended me. Oh well, we're friendly on Facebook today.)

I wish I could lose 50 lbs. If I lost 50 lbs. I'd:
  • Wear mini skirts.
  • I'd fit into more ESPRIT brand clothing.
  • Maybe I'd be a cheerleader.
  • I'd ask guys out.
  • I'd hang out at the beach and pool.
  • I'd feel so confident.

This kid Fred is kinda cute. Not my type but a little cute.

Tracey called me tonight. She is bringing in a Champion shirt for me to borrow. I'm so excited. (Champion sweatshirts were over-sized sweatshirts with the "C" logo on them. They were super popular between 1987-1988 and cost about $40, my parents bought me two but that was their limit so oftentimes I'd borrow them from other girls.) I got to borrow a gray one from Shannon too.

Tracey is so pretty. She can have any guy she wants. I wish I could pick and choose a guy to date.  If I only could loose 50 lbs. I would be able to do that too, maybe. I don't get it, so many ugly chicks in school have boyfriends, but I guess because they're skinny that's all that matters. (Back then we didn't know the term "Butterface"...)

This kid Scott T. was actually nice to me today. I was always really nice to him, but he was always a jerk to me. Totally hated me for some reason. It seems like anyone I like is mean to me. Tomorrow I'm going into school late, Mom and I are going out to lunch.

I got a 93 on my Math test!!!!! I'm so angry though, I know I haven't lost any weight and I have to weigh in tomorrow. What a joke. I don't even know why I go to these Weight Watcher meetings. They must think I'm such a jerk. Shannon gave out her birthday invitations today.

I love rereading these old diaries. It's amazing to see that in many ways I haven't really changed much.

  1. Weren't all diaries like this, even when our reasons for not being whatever it was we thought we should be, were different? Did some people really have all happy diary entries. Happy was always what we appeared to be on the outside. Diary entries, were how we felt on the inside and didn't talk about, out loud. (at least mine were)

  3. Wow that takes me back! I remember those Champion sweaters. I wasn't allowed to have them though. Too expensive for me, being that I was in fourth grade back then I wasn't allowed to pick expensive clothes.

  5. These posts are always so fascinating to me. It's so interesting to see what you deemed as the "most important thing in the world" at that moment. I can totally see myself in these entries. Um, except for the part about wanting to wear ESPIRIT.

  6. This is so cool....you were so obsessed with 'losing 50 pounds'...you probably would have weighed NOTHING if you lost 50!
I wish I hadn't lost my 'journals', I could have posted stuff I wrote in 1968!

  7. I wish I could find my old diaries. I can't imagine what all I had to say. Although I was never very good at writing in them. XOXO

  8. I remember champion sweatshirts too, but I don't remember having one.

I saved my old diaries, but I never kept them up so I have 5 in the basement in a bin of my old stuff. My writing is totally not as thoughtful as yours, it is mostly about who I loved at the time and didn't "love" me back. Plus there were lots of hearts all around it (dork)!!

I LAUGHED so hard over the butterface thing, I had never heard of that!!!

  9. Tucked away in my basement, along with a variety of old diaries, are my Monkees ticket stubs, albums, and a ton of old VHS tapes that are loaded with reruns of the show I would tape all day off MTV while I was at school. It was like a moment of kindred coming here and reading this today!

  12. Ms. Anthropy - So true, so true!

Brittney - lots of bloggers do, there was even once a live show in NYC where 20-30th somethings would stand up and read their old diaries in public. I should have done that while I was living there!

Jerry - They were really big back then. I don't even know what the big deal was about, they were cotton sweatshirts. Big deal!

Maggi - thanks for that! I was crazy in love with The Monkees. As a kid I even interviewed Micky for our local newspaper, Newsday - they had a kids section, Kidsday.

Copyboy - you're too funny :) My fellow LI kid... Boys had it easy. No Camp Beverly Hills, Esprit or Benetton, etc.

Joe - I actually ended up losing the 50 senior year. Only to gain back that and more freshman year in college. Discovering beer and campus pizza did me in.

    Gwen - it's amazing to re-read them!

Girl Next Door - I think Howard Stern was the founder of Butter Face. Ha ha!

Diff Kind of girl - find those items, they're awesome to look through. I can sit for hours sifting through memories at my mom's house.

    Bossy Betty - thanks!

    Yankee Girl - do it!

  13. You're a brave soul. My diary entries were usually destroyed a few short days after I'd written them. :)

  14. HA!!! Another great installment---On a side note, i loved those Champion sweatshirts (big in my skool in 1990) but could never wear them bc my big chest looked awful in them! All the lithe skater and hardcore chicks could wear them and look all cuddly and adorable, i just looked like a fat mom! :)

  15. it's SO funny that i've thought about sharing some of my diary entries from when i was 9. i think that's the oldest DIARY I found. i wrote stories and poems that i found from age 7. and then everything else from then on out. i actually tossed an old journal last year.
it was all horrible memories. it was full of sadness and stupidity and it really did me no good reminiscing on any of those memories. actually, i started by just tearing out the pages that were memories i'd like to have forgotten, but then when i was done, i had torn all the pages out. ;)

i love that i wasn't the only person in the world who felt it necessary to keep a diary after all these years. ;)

    thanks for sharing!!

  16. That's really sad that the sound of birds depresses you. Last night I heard the cries of a killdeer and was instantly perked up.

Great post. I always enjoy it when you share these entries.

  17. I never kept any of my diaries. I did for a while thinking that one day my daughters would want to read them and the reality is my daughters couldn't be less interested so they were tossed. I am pretty sure mine read pretty similar to yours. ;-) Hehehehehe

  18. Always save the Monkees Memorabilia....

It's always so interesting to see what people thought and how they felt when they were younger.... I'm horrible with childhood memories.... I don't remember anything (other than pop culture....)

  20. I wish that I kept journals back then. Well, I had one but I threw it out. I remember my cousin Mary and I listening to The Monkees Greatest Hits album in the early 80s. Thanks for following my blog. Not sure if people actually go back to see if their comments got responded to so I thought that I'd mention this here. Looking forward to reading more of your posts.

  25. Haha, these are so funny and awesome to read! Thanks for letting us into your past world (oh man, teenage you would be SO PISSED OFF right now, wouldn't she?). It's fun to see that things in the teenage world really haven't changed much over time.

By the way, thanks for following Twee Poppets! I'm following you back, and can't wait to read more. :)
