Last night, the hubs and I stopped at TCBY for some delicious white chocolate mousse frozen yogurt. As always, I'm drawn to the beverage-filled display fridges. I love checking out the packaging, brands and selection. Sure I've worked in advertising for ten years, but the truth is, as you know, I'm the ultimate consumer. I notice newness and am overwhelmed with excitement over it. For example, last visit there, I noticed Tropicana canned fruit juice drinks were sportin' some very cool graphics! One thing in that beverage case really stood out though - MELLO YELLO! Unreal!
Now, hear me out, I don't "do the Dew" and am not really a fan of Mountain Dew or any citrus beverages such as Sprite or 7-Up, but you know me. I'm seriously down with the retro scene! This Mello Yello revival thrilled me so much, I had to Google and get the scoop. I haven't seen Mello Yello in ages. Help me out readers, have you seen it?
Apparently Mello Yello has had limited distribution and Coca-Cola has redesigned their packaging to give it a more retro feel and is relaunching the product in various cities. Mello Yello's ad campaign will focus on digital and radio ads. Seeing old items brought back to life makes me smile, you have no idea! This old-school branding that has me loving Coca-Cola.
Anyway, here's the scoop on Mello Yello! It's good to see they're back in the game--someone needs to compete with Mountain Dew.
Fun Facts About Mello Yello From Coca-Cola
- Released in October of 1979, great year by the way!
- Discontinued flavors include: Mello Yello Melon, Mello Yello Cherry and Mello Yello Peach
- Rumor has it the drink was named after 1967 Donavan's song, "Mellow Yellow"
- In the 1990 NASCAR type movie, Days of Thunder, Tom Cruise's character drove a Mello Yello-sponsored sports car.

Holy cr*p this post took me all the way back to my kid days hanging out at the South Hills Mall (Poughkeepsie... HOLLA!). TCBY yogurt and Mello Yello... now that's 80's!
Completely forgot about Mello Yello. And RC Cola for that matter.
I haven't seen it around here, but I'll keep my peepers open for it!
mello yellow peach...i think i just threw up in my mouth a little bit
Ian - my mom drank RC cola almost exclusively during her pregnancy with me. I blame it for all my problems...hooray for guilt trips!
I'm with ya on the lemon-lime/citrusy sodas...don't care for them. I dig the retro Mello Yello design though! I'd try the cherry one, that sounds good.
I've seen it here in Texas at the Which Wich sandwich shops. I was shocked!
I am jealous you can go to TCBY. They're all gone here in Austin. My fave was white chocolate mousse and raspberries. Mmmmmm! I was just thinking yesterday how I could go for that yummy treat. There are new yogurt stores popping up, but I haven't tried them. How could they possibly measure up?
Hey Ally! I just blogged about Mello Yello not too long ago. That is awesome! Coca Cola is my favorite soft drink brand. I get up and grab a Coke and go to bed with a Coke by my side. Probably has a little something to do with why I'm overweight. Oh well.
I LOVE Mello Yello but I'm rarely anyplace you ever see it. Sadly. I did use to have a Mello Yello t-shirt though. :) And yes, it was yellow!
that is so cool! i like that new look! and i would love to try the melon flavor. sounds yummy. :)

Mellow Yellow is always one of those ones I walk right past. I never really cared for the taste.
I'm-a just-a mad about-a Saffron.
She's just mad about me.
I haven't seen Mello Yello in forever!
I worked at a fast food place when I was in h/s and Mello Yello was our version of Dew. :)
So many people flipped because it wasn't Dew. :/
I'll have to open my eyeballs and check for it next time I'm out. I remember the drink - but don't think I ever actually had it???
I thought they still made this stuff. As I recall, it was more lemony than Mt. Dew. It had more of a citrus taste to it. It was good stuff though.
Is it named after calm Asians?
I was so going to pounce on the DOT thang if you didn't. haha. Great post.
Great retro design! I'm waiting for marketers to bring back those really convenient little pop tablets called Fizzies which were sold during the 50's and 60's--you added water and there was your flavored soda. Unique!
I never had Mello Yello or Mountain Dew before. I wish that we still had a TCBY near us - we used to love going there. White Chocolate Mousse sounds delicious. Mom got me their cakes for my birthday a few times in the early 90's, maybe 1989 too.
For whatever reason, I live in a part of the country that has never gotten into frozen yogurt. I had some when I visited my family in CA and that brought back memories :)
Mello Yello? Ugh…tastes like radiator fluid. Now, I think I'll run out and get a Pepsi Lite or a Tab.
I always wondered if it was named after the song. Mmm, Mello Yello. Welcome back :)
Mello Yello!
Mmmmmmmmm!
I never knew that there were different flavors of it. I don't know if it's just me, but Mello Yello Peach sounds naaaaasty.
Hey Ally! My name is Lela and I work for Coca-Cola, the makers of Mello Yello. I came across your fantastic post about the Mello Yello redesign. I'm delighted it sparked some nostalgia, and you and your readers have enjoyed seeing it and reminiscing.
Love the blog btw! Have a great day.
