E.G. Smith Socks |
My high school buddy, Tracey recently purchased a pair of E.G. Smith socks on eBay for over $22. Teen or tween girls growing up in the mid to late 1980s are sure to agree, you just weren't cool unless you sported slouchy, baggy socks. The E.G. Smith brand, priced at a hefty $10-$12 back in 1986, were somewhat of a status symbol like the Benetton polo or Swatch watch. Although baggy, slouchy socks came in a variety of colors and styles, I personally preferred the white E.G. Smith socks.
Between 1986-1987, I attended a Catholic high school where every girl in school paired the white slouchy socks (folded over once at the top) with their penny loafers and uniform skirts. These cute socks didn't work for me and my chubby ankles and calves. Not to mention, my feet were already wide, so the super thick socks made my preppy penny loafers even tighter. Baggy E.G. Smith socks looked simply adorable and flattering on girls with slender calves. I remember longing for that look at age 13.
Tracey sports her slouchy socks. |
If you're looking to relive your youth with classic pair of these slouchy socks, like Tracey, you will have to turn to eBay. Although E.G. Smith still sells socks, they no longer carry the over-sized slouch socks we girls of the '80s adored.

I remember wearing baby blue and pale pink ones layered to match my pink & blue reeboks....I was soo cool! ;-) LOL
Wow! $22 for a pair of socks! I used to sport slouch socks with stirrup pants -- remember those? Haha! But really, slouch socks are making a comeback. I've bought a couple pairs from: http://www.socks4life.com/women-s-socks/slouch/.
I know the look but I had no idea it was a particular brand.
$22 is a little hefty for me and I too have the chubby ankle/calves so I will have to pass!
I remember these vividly! I had/have wide feet and yep, my feet were tight in any kind of shoe.
See I always used to get those confused with the leg-warmers' look
ugh- i remember these ridiculous looking monsters. -i also remember layering several colors, you know, because wearing just one pair of slouch socks didn't have enough "umph" to it.
I had no idea it was that deep. I thought they were just socks...
That's why I come here, to learn!!!
lol...
Um. I had no idea those went out of style with the 80's. Damn this small town!
I totally remember the whole slouch socks era. If I were to get a pair of those now, they'd look like regular socks, given the cankles! AACK!
OMG. You are telling me your friend paid $22 for 20-year-old socks?!
She bought the socks brand new and that's about what they'd cost now, it's 20 years later!
I remember those being the cool way to get the look of leg warmers without actually wearing leg warmers (a fad that preceded slouch socks) They did look really cute with Keds, tight stirrup pants and oversized sweaters. And the poofed bangs, can't forget the poofed bangs in the shape of a dome on your forehead! - G
Those really, really need to never come in style ever again. Ever.
EG Smith? The brand we had in New Jersey that everyone wore, was called Wigwam. With a tee pee logo on the foot.
They still sell the slouch versions at different mall kiosks specializing in socks or shoes...I saw them at Freehold Raceway mall I think. 7 or 8 dollars a pair.
I had them to match every outfit(my obsessed more than I did about that)
I had: Red, White, Teal, Black, Purple, yellow, Green, hot pink, NEON Pink.
We wore them color coordinated with stirrup pants and those long button down shirts and poofy hair bows or banana clips.
Also, from the 90's portion of the sock craze, Skidz(thin flannel baggy pants, in different plaid patterns with a draw string) with the cuffs folded, knocked, rolled or whatever the term was for your region, the slouch socks had to meet exactly at the edge of the cuff with NO skin showing.
If that fashion faux pas was committed, you could be sure to hear the kis say crap like, Wheres the Flood? you gonna go wading?
I had a few pairs of these back then and so did my mom. I wouldn't want to wear them now though.
If anybody has extra EG's let me know I would love to buy them!
supraman442001@yahoo.com is my email and I am also on messenger.
oh my gosh those socks!!! I haven't seen them in ages. Memories...
Went to Catholic school too, and they were The thing to pair with the skirt. We could only wear white ones... must have had about 80pr over my 4 years, but Wigwams were the brand for us.
yes pika23! WIGWAMS! we wore them for cheerleading - that's the only reason why i had a pair. i had plenty of imitation ones (my mom was known for her no frills spending) but never enough wigwams.
You can still buy slouch socks ... not the brand you mention, but they are easily available through Sears (Silver-Toe brand) and Sock Dreams or a yoga/dance store. The movie Flash Dance probably spurred their popularity more than anything!
Guess what! For those of you trying to recapture your youth, I just found out that E.G. Smith still makes Slouch Socks. Here is a link: http://www.sockdreams.com/products/socks/eg-smith/eg-smith-original-bootsocks:11397
