I loathed the New Monkees in 1986 |
1986 was before call ID, call block and *69. In other words, there was nothing you could do when you got a random prank or evil call. I remember a man called our family home and went off on me for talking smack about this AWESOME new show. Dude, you're a man and I'm 13 1/2, what the hell?
Let's face it, nobody likes anything that's redone. Remember New Coke? How insulting is it to any band, even a prefab group like The Monkees, to release a NEW version? Imagine the New U2 or the New REM? Eww! For more info on what The New Monkees were all about, check out The New Monkees Wiki page.
Here's a clip to refresh your memory... For the younger readers, check it out anyway and hope nobody ever redoes your favorite band.
Ok, just found your blog and am totally tickled at the similarities! Grew up on Long Island, graduated HS in 1990, wearing the same size, loving the Monkees (yes, I even attempted to love the new ones...), and geeking out on all the remember this and that stuff on here. I found you while searching for EG socks and GEAR bags. Thanks for the huge smile I have on my face right now!
ReplyDeleteThis post made me laugh out loud. Great title, too.
ReplyDeleteI vaguely remember the "New Monkees" but that's a lot of mullets....
ReplyDeleteTotally agree with you here. Glad you were the outspoken thirteen year old willing to tell the truth!
ReplyDeleteWhat the heck was that??? I have no memory, whatsoever and for once... I'm good with it! Yikes!
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you! I wasn't all that fond of the "Old" Monkees either though...
ReplyDeletebrutal.
ReplyDeleteYou are oh-so-right-on, Ally. I never saw a single episode, never heard of them, never even knew about a "new" monkees - but if this clip was any indication of what they were like, it would have been torture to try to watch even one episode.
ReplyDeleteI do, however, take exception to your statement that "nobody likes anything that's redone". I'd take me a "new and redone" Camaro, Mustang, Charger... you get my drift. :) But when it comes to bands, I certainly agree. What were they thinking?
I totally missed this, because I was 9 for most of that year, but I was a *real* Monkees fan and I would have agreed that it sucked. Just like New Coke did!
ReplyDeleteI don't remember them at all. After watching the clip, I'm glad I don't...
ReplyDeleteI never got into the Monkees anyway, so I guess I wasn't missing out.

ReplyDeleteI fully agree too. I forgot about the. I refused to watch/listen to them. There was only one group of Monkees!

My sisters protected me from them. I think they thought I was too young for that monstrosity.
ReplyDeleteI never even realised there were any New Monkees! :D
ReplyDeleteYou remember when Coke came out with the 'new formula'? Gosh. That was a scary time.
ReplyDeleteAnd number two on the list was this debacle.
I remember this.
And hey,hey...they weren't the Monkees!
I'm so happy I don't remember them!! I swear if anyone tries to re-do the backstreet boys I will be pissed! lol =P

I remember that article I think! I hated them too!!! Were they also published in Parade or one of those other New York newspapers?
ReplyDeleteI remember the regular Monkees article and a friend of mine had your magazine you put out
